AED Maintenance
An AED is only lifesaving if it’s ready to work. Routine maintenance ensures your AED is always rescue-ready when every second counts.
Why AED Maintenance Matters
AEDs are designed to last, but they’re not “set-it-and-forget-it” devices. Pads can expire, batteries can drain, and devices can become non-compliant if not regularly checked.
Failing to maintain your AED could mean it won’t work when it's needed most.
Key Maintenance Tasks
To keep your AED in top condition, follow these regular maintenance practices:
- Visual Inspections: Check for any damage, missing parts, or warning indicators on the AED.
- Status Indicator Checks: Most AEDs have a light or screen showing whether the unit is ready for use.
- Battery Monitoring: Know your battery’s lifespan (often 2–5 years, depending on the model) and replace it before it expires.
- Pad Replacement: Electrode pads typically expire every 2–4 years and should be replaced before they expire. Pads should always be replaced after use. Always have a backup set on hand.
- Clean Environment: Store your AED in a clean, dry, and visible location with no obstructions.
- Keep It Accessible: Ensure the AED isn’t locked in a drawer or cabinet and is clearly marked with signage.
- Update Software (if needed): Some AEDs require occasional firmware updates to stay current with guidelines.
How Often Should You Check an AED?
We recommend:
- Monthly visual inspections.
- Replace pads and check battery status after every use. It is also a good practice to replace batteries after use.
- Every 2–4 years to replace pads and possibly batteries, depending on manufacturer guidelines and expiration dates.
Pro tip: Set calendar reminders and keep a log or use an AED program management tool, like AED365.
