In Wyoming, the deployment and use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are governed by specific statutes designed to enhance public health and safety. Key requirements include:

Training:

Individuals or entities possessing an AED must obtain appropriate training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and AED use. This training should be provided by the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or another nationally recognized course approved by the Wyoming Department of Health. Refresher training is required every two years to maintain proficiency.

Maintenance Program:

The AED must be maintained and tested according to the manufacturer’s operational guidelines to ensure its readiness during emergencies.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Notification:

Owners of an AED are required to notify the local emergency communications center and the local ambulance service of the existence, location, and type of AED they possess.

Good Samaritan Protection:

Wyoming law provides immunity from civil liability for individuals and entities who, in good faith and without compensation, render emergency care using an AED. This protection extends to:

  • Rescuers
  • Prescribing physicians
  • Trainers
  • Property owners where an AED is located

This immunity does not cover acts of willful or criminal misconduct, gross negligence, reckless misconduct, or a conscious, flagrant indifference to the safety of the victim.

These regulations aim to encourage the availability and proper use of AEDs, thereby enhancing emergency response efforts across the state.
