In Nebraska, the deployment and use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are governed by specific statutes designed to promote public health and safety. Key requirements include:

Training:

Individuals expected to use an AED must complete a training course in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and AED use. The training should be provided by organizations such as the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, or an equivalent nationally recognized course.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Notification:

Upon acquiring an AED, the owner is required to notify the local EMS provider of the device’s existence, location, and type. Any changes in the AED’s location must also be reported. This requirement does not apply if the AED is acquired for use in a private residence, a health care facility, or a health care practitioner facility.

Maintenance Program:

The AED must be maintained and tested regularly in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines to ensure its readiness for use during emergencies.

Good Samaritan Protection:

Nebraska law provides immunity from civil liability for individuals who, in good faith and without compensation, render emergency care using an AED. This protection does not cover acts of gross negligence or willful or wanton misconduct.

These regulations aim to encourage the availability and proper use of AEDs, thereby enhancing emergency response efforts across the state.
